Navigating eori numbers:

A quick and helpful guide

It's no secret that international shipping can be a right pain at times. Whether you're a well-established company, a budding business, or someone who's sent abroad before, you've probably encountered a pesky hitch or painstaking delay, trying to get to the other side.

To avoid these disruptions as much as possible, the EU and UK introduced a new system: EORI numbers. For those new to international shipments, or keen to better understand how they work, here's what you should know:

What is an EORI?

An EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification) is a unique code, shown as a mix of numbers and letters. Customs keeps track of any products leaving and entering the EU, and from whom they were dispatched, through EORI numbers. The first two letters are a code representing the state of the sender e.g. GB or FR.

Who needs an EORI number?

Anyone looking to ship from the UK or the EU to outside, or vice versa, including businesses and individuals alike, must have an EORI. Consider it a second passport; without it, it's almost impossible for you to get anywhere.

If sending products just within the EU, then you don't need to apply for an EORI, but if you are sending from the UK to the EU, you will need one.

Additionally, if your shipments are just for personal use, not selling or auctioning, then an EORI isn't necessary. So no need to worry if you just want your suitcase back!

It's all well, knowing that EORI numbers are essential to international exporters, but why do we need them?

      1.    Speed: Customs are able to quickly track your deliveries, and minimise any delays from checks or confusion.

      2.   Efficiency: Each shipper has a code unique to them, meaning it is easier than ever to follow the bustling traffic of                        global trading.

      3.   Extra Perks: Having an EORI for the EU and/or UK automatically qualifies you for the best trade agreements and                     treatment from European and British borders. For example, following a treaty between the EU and UK, those shipping               between the two won't have to pay extra on tariff duties.

      4.   No Need to Check: As long as you have an EORI, you'll know you're always following all regulations, saving you from               the stress.

Growing your business with EORIs

Aside from the boundless places it'll unlock for you - and your goods - it's important to consider the development of your enterprise, and the shortcuts EORI numbers bring:

  • More to Offer: Don't be limited to local services; the further there is to go, the further you can expand, and the more people you'll interest.
  • Don't keep customers waiting: Your clients will be amazed at how quick trans-national trade can be.
  • Open Global Gates: Having an EORI grants you access to markets outside your state, giving you grounds to spread your business.
  • Dodge the Dodgers: Fines and delays can be really disruptive to your orders, so obtaining an EORI number will minimise those pesky bothers.

Getting an EORI number in the UK:

Like your life after obtaining one, applying for your EORI is simple and easy. You just need to fill an online form, submitted to HMRC, and include the following details:

Your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference)

VAT (Value Added Tax) if registered

If applying as a business, your start date and SIC (Standard Industrial Specification)

If applying as an individual seller, your National Insurance number

Your EORI number should be assigned immediately; otherwise, you'll receive it within 3 - 5 working days. Easy-peasy!

How do I know my EORI is valid?

EORI numbers don't expire, as they will forever be allocated to only you, but if unsure of whether or not yours is valid, a validator can be used to confirm its condition.

EORIs will be different depending on whether you applied from the EU or UK, so use the correct validator.
